In June of 2009, the following three Zicam products were recalled:
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
- Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (Which had already been discontinued)
The recall followed an FDA Advisory in which the agency announced that it had received more than 130 reports of people who had permanently lost their sense of smell (anosmia) after using these Zicam products. Some people lost their smell after the first usage of the product, while others didn’t lose their sense of smell until after several uses.
The FDA also sent the manufacturer of these products, Matrixx Initiatives, a letter informing them that they may not put any of these products back on the market unless and until they demonstrate to the FDA that the products are safe.
The FDA has advised people to immediately discontinue the usage of these products. So if you still have any of these products in your home, do not use them.
